The giant oarfish, known as “king of herring”, “giant sea snake” or “ribbon fish” is a pelagic fish that can reach 11 meters , it is the largest bony fish in the world.

This fish that lives at more than 600 meters deep remains a mystery. Most studies of this species were made on stranded individuals. Recently, underwater robots were able to capture images of this fish in its wild environment.

This fish led to many myths. It gets its nickname “king of herrings» from fishermen after being observed close to herring school and because of his crown made of dorsal fins. In Asia, it is also known as “tsunami fish” because it has very often been observed after marine earthquakes.
This gelatinous fish is not tasty at all, you should ban it from your plates.
