Humanoid diving robot hunts for shipwreck treasures

A big move has been made in the seabed exploration field. The humanoid robot “Ocean One” created at Stanford University, with the collaboration of the French departement Drassm, was launched to discover the remains of the famous wreck: “La Lune”, a famous Louis XIV frigate that sank near the city of Toulon, France, in 1664. Because of its poor condition, this 800 tons weighed and 43 meters long ship weakened after several missions, and sank with 700 members of the crew aboard. It is lying now at more than 90 meters deep.

Technological advances

This humanoid robot has several advantages over its competitors. Besides being able to explore inaccessible depths for archaeologists, it gives the pilot connected by a “umbilical cord” the tactile sensations of a diver while making a submarine search thanks to numerous sensors placed on the robot.

Underwater robot characteristics

“Ocean One” is 2 meters long and weighs 180 kg. As a human being, he has a head with two eyes, which are actually cameras and two mechanical arms that allow it to search and catch items.

We can imagine in the near future new uses for this robot, in order to increase its possibilities.
