Dear readers, I am convinced that many of you have several hobbies to be added to scuba diving. This article is only for surfers who like taming the rolls made by the waves and then see what’s underneath. If you like both surfing and scuba diving, here are the best destinations to enjoy both of these activities. Follow the guide.
Uluwatu and Kuta, Bali Indonesia
Best period : May to October
The story of the discovery of this magical place has everything to seduce surfers. A group of Australians, looking for the perfect wave, had decided to cross the jungle to reach the coast. Once this obstacle crossed, they found themselves in front of a cliff of 15 meters high. After building a bamboo ladder, they were finally able to reach the sea and tame the beautiful waves at this place. Today stone steps have replaced the old ladder. Further north, Kuta Beach is accessible to as many people as it has a fast-international reputation. Indonesia offers other unmissable surf spots like Desert Point in Lombok neighboring Bali or Mentawai on Sumatra.
Bali also deserves a diving visit with a succession of dive sites that are more beautiful than others. Manta Point spots, Crystal Bay and the USS Liberty wreck are among the must-see spots.
Tamarin Bay Mauritius
Best period : November to April
This destination is a must for your world tour when searching for the best surf spots. The waves here are capricious but beautiful. During the period of June and July, the weather conditions impose on the surfer a duty of patience. Once the weather is nice, you’ll have plenty of time to tame these great waves.
Not far from here, there are dozens of diving centers that will offer excursions to the most beautiful dive sites of Mauritius including: St Jacques, The Cathedral, the wreck of the Hoi Siong No 6 and the Stella Maru and finally Whale Rock.
Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca Mexico
Best period : March to October
The stopover in Mexico has a good dose of chills and adrenaline. The “Mexican Pipeline” is, according to experts, as perfect as it is dangerous. The rolls break in a deafening noise. The waves are hollow and powerful. If you have confidence in your abilities, it is up to you to enjoy this little piece of the Pacific in its raw state.
Mexico also has natural beauty beneath the surface of the water. There are some diving clubs in Puerto Escondido offering day trips. Underwater, we discover a fauna and a coral flora with a great diversity of tropical species. In these waters, it is not uncommon to come across: whale sharks, dolphins, turtles and devil rays.
Banzai Pipeline, Oahu North Coast, Hawaii
Best period : December to March
This world-famous American surf spot attracts thousands of surfers every year. The almost cylindrical, powerful waves break near a coral reef, making it one of the most dangerous surf spots on the planet. The wave rolls usually reach 3 meters high which are ideal for any experienced surfer. Moreover, it is here that the last step of the surf world championship. Despite its prestige, the Pipeline also surfs when the waves do not exceed one meter. Make sure, however, to not give priority to a local surfer who does not joke with these things.
Hawaii is also a dream destination for scuba diving: you can see canyons, arches, drop-offs, shipwrecks like the “Sea Tiger” but also have the unique chance to dive at night with the manta rays: a unique show in the world!
Superbank, Gold Coast Australia
Best period : December to March
The myth is likely to take a hit but the most beautiful wave in the world is not natural. Barges installed 1km from the shore, allow to create perfect and regular rolls. So, it’s a paradise for surfers who can train on what’s best. It is not surprising that we often find some of the best surfers on the planet at this location. The flip side to this success is the high influx that one encounters in the water; up to 300 surfers will keep you companies in your adventure.
The underwater diving on the Gold Coast is also not irrelevant. Many diving centers are located along the coast and offer multiple dive sites. Among the most popular are the wrecks of the Scottish Prince, Sea Dragon and Aquarian but also the reefs of Migaloo, Greta, Mermaid and Kirra.
Teahupo’o, Tahiti French Polynesia
Best period : December to March
Teahupo’o is a surf spot that is world famous for its waves breaking to the right. or to the left from the surfer’s point of view. It is here that we find some of the widest and thickest regular waves in the world. The bottom consists of a coral reef located a few tens of centimeters from the surface, so it is best not to crash on top of having serious accidents. The show is worth the detour and its reputation is not assumed. In August 2000, Laird Hamilton rode a titanic wave of more than 15 meters then rushes into a tube the size of a garage.
Tahiti is a wonderful destination for scuba diving or to perfect oneself. The translucent waters are home to a sumptuous fauna and flora that will delight young and old alike. You can dive with reef sharks, lemon sharks, dolphins, rainbow jacks, napoleons, hammerhead sharks, gray sharks, leopard rays, moray eels, and even manta rays.
