Manta Alley
Current: Medium to strong
Located at the extreme south-west of Komodo Island, the Manta Alley dive site is one of the most iconic in Komodo National Park. Recessed in a small bay, the site is revealed on the surface by small rocky outcrops. Underwater, the rocks form an “alley” between 10 and 15 m deep. On the east side of the reef you can reach 30 meters deep. The highlight of the site is the opportunity to dive with the manta rays that come here in large numbers. There are sometimes more than 30 on a single dive. In addition to the manta rays show, which is mainly held from September to January, you will also see large parrot fish, barracudas, reef sharks, grouper, bighead and many invertebrates. If you also like the beautiful reefs, know that the corals at Manta Alley are superb. For divers that do not like cold, the water in Manta Alley can be colder than on other diving spots!
Manta Point Makassar Reef
Current: Medium
To the northeast of Komodo Island, there is another fabulous place to dive with manta rays: Manta Point. This reef consists mainly of rubble forming small mounds located between 8 and 15 meters deep, is a relatively easy drift dive. Between each of these mounds, there are small coral gardens sheltering a large variety of small fish. These underwater cleaning stations attract the manta rays that come, in large numbers, to get rid of parasites. It is possible to observe them while sheltering from the current. The rest of the time, we spend it being carried by the current while examining the ballet of manta rays going back in the opposite direction with, sometimes 5 or 6 individuals in the lineup.
On Manta Point, it is not uncommon to encounter eagle rays, napoleons or reef sharks.
Batu Bolong or Hollow Rock
Current: Strong to very strong
This place is one of the most beautiful dive sites in Komodo. On the spot, you will see at first sight only a small rock protruding from the surface. Underwater, the show is different; you will discover a giant rock dipping up to 70 meters deep. The rock is covered with hard and soft corals, sponges and beautiful gorgonians. This garden is home to many but not only reef fish: white tip sharks, napoleons, dogtooth tunas and large schools of fish are also seen. In fact, some groups are so dense that you will have trouble seeing where you go! Komodo is really an amazing dive site of the Islands where one needs to have a solid experience.
Castle Rock
Current: Stong to very strong
Located just north of the small island of Gili Lawa Laut, north of Komodo Island, the Castle Rock site is reserved for experienced divers. The reason is simple, a strong current and the obligation to go down quickly. This dive site is a unique place in the world. Its name comes from the grand pinnacle in tiers that looks, if one is imaginative, to a large castle. The pinnacle starts at 4 meters below the surface and goes down to a depth of 24 meters. At this place, a gulf forces you to stop to contemplate the vision that appears before your eyes: black tip sharks, white tip sharks, gray reef sharks, big-headed sharks, tunas, giant groupers, manta rays and, if you are lucky, dolphins. You can see almost everything on this site if the current is at the rendezvous. On the rest of the course, the corals are breathtaking and the sea fans are gigantic. This dive spot in Komodo is certainly one of the most beautiful to admire in a lifetime.
Crystal Rock
Current: Strong to very strong
A few hundred meters from Castle Rock is another beautiful Komodo dive site: Crystal Rock. This spot is visible from the surface at low tide. On site, you can observe a rocky ridge that suggests a beautiful rock formation. On the rocks, there are many hard and soft corals, sponges golden and orange but also beautiful gorgonians. The dive site is home to a wide variety of species: turtles, cuttlefish, octopus, anthias, surgeons, butterflies, groupers, snappers, wrasses, bighead sharks and white tip sharks.
Cauldron ShotGun
Current: Very strong
This scuba diving spot is reserved for very experienced divers. This dive site is divided into two parts, the first is over a sandy bottom with a wall covered with gorgonians and soft corals. The beginning of the dive takes place with an almost total absence of current during a good twenty minutes. Take the opportunity to observe the sea fans where many seahorses are hiding.
Arrived at a deeper pass, is revealed the second part of the dive site. At the same moment, the current rises suddenly and you are swept into the current like straws in the wind. You will pass over faults and canyons. Equip yourself with a hook to stop when you need it, especially to observe the manta ray ballet, quite common on this dive spot: a dive full of chills!
Three Sisters
Current: Medium
This Komodo dive site is located south of Flores. It consists of three huge rocks placed on a sandy bottom 30 meters deep. The upper part of the rocks is accessible from 3 meters which is ideal to make its safety level. The rock is covered with incredibly rich corals where nudibranchs, sea cucumbers and starfish gather. In the deep part of the site, white tip sharks can be seen.
Siaba besar
Current : Low
North of Komodo National Park, the Siaba Besar dive site is perfect for beginner divers. This spot is organized in two very different parts: a sandy bottom on one side and a large coral reef on the other. This dive spot also bears another name: the “City of Turtles” because it is possible to meet half a dozen turtles per dive.
The sandy bottom lends itself well to the search for macro fauna such as frogfishes or flatfish. On the coral reef, you can see white tip sharks, lionfish, moray eels and many other creatures.
Police corner
Current : Medium to Strong
This dive site in Komodo is definitely worth a visit. Police Corner consists mainly of a steep drop on which fire corals have beautifully developed. During your immersion, it is possible to meet eagle rays, stains with black spots or even reef sharks. Corals are home to some of the most interesting macro fauna: nudibranchs, antennas and seahorses.
Yellow Wall of Texas
Current : Low
Yellow Wall is one of the best Komodo dives for beginner divers. Located to the south of Rinca Island, Yellow Wall is indeed a beautiful yellow color, because of the many bright sea cucumbers and starfish that populate this seabed. It is an ideal dive site to take macro pictures, but also bigger fish like sharks or turtles.
