Ten meters. That’s the depth GoPro announces for its HERO13 Black without a housing. Imagine a dive planned at 25 m on a wreck: with this bare camera on your wrist, you’re out of the technical specs before halfway down the descent.
This guide sorts diving cameras based on what their manufacturer writes in black and white, on their own datasheet. We have not tested any of these models (and we won’t claim otherwise), so you won’t find any rating out of 10 or “editor’s choice” here.
The data was collected on October 3, 2026. Manufacturers update their datasheets without warning, so check the official page before buying.
Up to what depth can a diving camera hold without a housing?
Without a housing, the six models selected here are rated between 10 and 20 meters by their manufacturers. It ranges from 10 m for the GoPro HERO13 Black and the Insta360 X4 up to 20 m for the DJI Osmo Action 6. Beyond that, you need the brand’s waterproof housing.
| Model | Without housing | With brand housing | Maximum video |
|---|---|---|---|
| GoPro HERO13 Black | 10 m | 60 m (Protective Housing) | 5.3K at 60 fps |
| DJI Osmo Action 4 | 18 m | 60 m | 4K at 120 fps |
| DJI Osmo Action 6 | 20 m | 60 m | 8K at 30 fps |
| Insta360 X4 | 10 m | 50 m (Invisible Dive Case) | 8K at 30 fps in 360° |
| Insta360 X5 | 15 m | 60 m (Invisible Dive Case) | 8K at 30 fps in 360° |
| OM System Tough TG-7 | 15 m | 45 m (PT-059) | 4K at 30 fps |
But a nominal depth remains a datasheet value. It assumes clean seals, a well-locked battery hatch, and a camera that hasn’t been shocked just before entering the water, which no one really controls on a rocking boat deck. Insta360 writes this in the X5 manual: avoid entering the water at high speed, as impact and pressure can damage the device. A backward flip entry, camera in hand, looks a lot like this scenario. So keep a margin.
The best guideline remains the deepest planned dive on your trip, never your average.
Which models to choose in 2026, based on manufacturer datasheets?
Six models tick the box of a clear official waterproof rating: the GoPro HERO13 Black, the DJI Osmo Action 4 and 6, the Insta360 X4 and X5, and the OM System Tough TG-7. They do not target the same use. The choice mainly depends on your usual depth and what you want to film.
GoPro HERO13 Black
GoPro announces 5.3K at 60 frames per second, HyperSmooth 6.0 stabilization, and a 1900 mAh Enduro battery. The rest depends on the lenses. The brand sells HB-Series modules separately, including a Macro. The same housing can therefore switch from a wide reef shot to a nudibranch, provided you have bought the module and mounted it before the dive. Waterproof to 10 m alone.
DJI Osmo Action 4 and Osmo Action 6
The Action 4 features a 1/1.3-inch sensor, films in 4K up to 120 fps, and goes down to 18 m without housing. The Action 6 upgrades to a 1/1.1-inch sensor, 8K, and 20 m without housing, with a variable aperture from f/2.0 to f/4.0. Both reach 60 m in the DJI housing.
Insta360 X4 and X5
These are 360° cameras. The X4 holds 10 m bare and 50 m in the Invisible Dive Case, the X5 holds 15 m bare and 60 m in its case. Another important point for travel: the X5 lenses are replaceable.
OM System Tough TG-7
The only compact camera on the list. It is rated for 15 m without housing and 45 m in the PT-059 housing, with a 25-100 mm equivalent optical zoom and focusing from 1 cm. For daytime macro, it is the most logical tool of the bunch, in our opinion.
And the Paralenz Vaquita 2nd Gen, cited everywhere as “the 350-meter camera”? The figure of 350 m without housing was indeed in its August 2022 announcement, relayed by dive press. But Paralenz was liquidated as early as October 2022, according to Divernet.
Without a manufacturer behind it, no more after-sales service or updates, so we removed it from the selection.
Why do your videos turn blue at depth?
Water filters light by color. According to NOAA Ocean Exploration, blue penetrates best, then green, then yellow, orange, and finally red, which disappears quickly with depth. Result: without artificial light, your images lose their reds long before you notice it with your eyes.
The brain compensates for part of this loss during the dive. The sensor, however, records what really happens. However, NOAA only provides a clear numerical reference: at 100 meters, red light no longer penetrates at all. Between the surface and this depth, the loss is gradual and depends on the water of the day, its clarity, and the time. No one can give you a single depth where “everything turns blue.”
Two tools correct this.
The red filter rebalances sunlight in shallow water, and it loses its interest when there is no longer enough red to rebalance, which happens sooner or later depending on the clarity of the water that day. The video light, on the other hand, restores color to your subject at close range. The criteria for choosing it are the same as for a dive light well adapted to your practice: angle, autonomy, announced waterproofing.
Which accessories are worth buying before your trip?
The manufacturer’s housing comes first as soon as your planned dive exceeds the camera’s nominal depth. Next come a video light, spare batteries and cards, then a handle or a small tray. The rest is comfort-related, and you can wait to know your real needs.
Take the manufacturer’s housing, compatible with your exact model. GoPro specifies, for example, that its Protective Housing rated for 60 m is designed only for HERO13, HERO12, HERO11, and HERO10 Black. A generic housing might hold. But you lose the guarantee of compatibility verified by the manufacturer, and a case that leaks at 20 m floods the camera it was supposed to protect within seconds, along with all the week’s images on the card. In short, saving money is questionable.
A camera, a light, and a handle add volume and change your trim.
But your buoyancy comes before the image. If your photo equipment grows, revisit the basics of a well-adjusted diving weight system during a calm dive, without trying to film.
Filming without losing track of your dive
The camera adds a task to an activity that already has many: depth, air, buddy team, buoyancy. For DAN, this task overload is a known cause of diving accidents. A simple device, which you know how to set with your eyes closed, requires less attention than a model full of menus.
DAN published in 2022 a case that speaks to all those who film. A diver equipped with a camera had planned to stay at a maximum of 30 m. He was filming when he felt dizziness, looked at his computer, and discovered he was at 53 m. He ascended very quickly, was still able to do a 3-minute stop at 5 m, then was placed under oxygen as a precaution with ear bleeding. This story clearly shows that the camera screen captures the attention that should be given to the computer.
Yet the solution involves few gestures.
Take a look at your computer and your dive pressure gauge at every plan change, not just when the subject leaves. Start by filming easy dives you already know. And never put your hand on the reef to stabilize a shot, because touching marine life damages what you are trying to film. Your first videos will be less spectacular, and that is the price of an intact margin.
How to maintain and transport your dive camera?
After each sea dive, rinse the camera with fresh water. Insta360 even recommends, for the X5, to soak it for 5 to 10 minutes in fresh water. Check the seals and the hatch before each entry into the water, then dry everything before recharging.
The X5 manual adds a detail that is often forgotten. You must remove the lens protectors before going into the water. Thus, a protection designed for dry land can ruin an underwater shot. So read the waterproofing section of your model’s manual, even if it seems obvious, because each brand slips in its own instructions there, sometimes in the footnotes, where no one looks. Then store the camera, housing, and batteries in a hard case, and keep the batteries in your carry-on luggage according to your airline’s rules.
A dirty seal is enough to lose everything.
If you are starting out with a bare camera, snorkeling on a snorkeling spot in France remains a good testing ground, far from the limits of the specifications. The cost of this caution is measured in rinsing minutes. That of a leak is measured in a camera to be repurchased, and lost footage.
FAQ
Can a GoPro HERO13 Black go down to 30 meters?
Not without a housing. GoPro states it is waterproof to 10 m alone. Its Protective Housing, compatible with the HERO13 Black, is rated for 60 m.
Is the Paralenz Vaquita still a good purchase?
It was announced to be waterproof to 350 m without housing in August 2022. But the Paralenz company was liquidated in October 2022, according to Divernet. A used model therefore no longer has a manufacturer for after-sales service.
Red filter or video light, which to choose?
The red filter is used in shallow water, with sunlight. The light restores color at short distance, regardless of depth.
Is a 360° camera suitable for diving?
Yes, in its housing. Insta360 recommends the Invisible Dive Case for filming in 360° underwater, to obtain a correct image stitching. Without housing, the X5 is rated for 15 m and the X4 for 10 m.
