The 12 Best Snorkeling Destinations in the World: Season, Current, and Rules

Since August 1, 2024, a foreign visitor pays 15 US dollars to enter the Hol Chan Marine Reserve in Belize, up from 10 previously, according to The San Pedro Sun. This kind of detail is missing from most snorkeling rankings.

So we took up our old list of 12 destinations again. The names remain. For each spot, you will find the season, access from the beach or boat, the current, swimming level, supervision, and local rules, without any promise of animal encounters.

Staying in mainland France? Our selection of the best snorkeling spots in France details the French coasts spot by spot.

How to compare 12 snorkeling destinations without relying on photos?

Compare five criteria before the color of the water: the season, access from the beach or boat, the current, swimming level, and supervision. Add local rules, because several spots on this list are located in a marine protected area with an entrance fee.

Destination Spot Season Access and Current Rules
Mexico Isla Mujeres, cenotes Whale shark from May 15 to September 17, 2026 Boat, open sea 120 boats per day maximum
Costa Rica Cahuita National Park February to April (indicative) Current to inquire Entry on village side by donation
Belize Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley Impossible to decide from here Boat 15 US dollars since August 2024
Polynesia Tahiti, Moorea Whales from July to November (indicative) Boat Supervised entry (2025)
Guadeloupe Îlets Pigeon All year round (indicative) Boat from Malendure Core of national park
Seychelles Port Launay Impossible to decide from here Beach or boat 200 rupees (non-residents)
Egypt Giftun Islands, Safaga All year round (indicative) Boat, offshore reefs Protected zone
Thailand Ko Phi Phi November to April (indicative) Boat 400 baht (2022)
Indonesia Raja Ampat Impossible to decide from here Boat, tidal currents 2 fees of 1,000,000 rupiah (2026)

The current decides more than the photo.

An operator’s page showing a calm lagoon says nothing about the time of the outing or the tide. Yet the same reef can be flat in the morning and crossed by a current in the afternoon. Seasons remain indicative. When no dated data has been found, we write it down. The briefing of the day remains the only information that counts because it takes into account the weather and tide at the exact moment you enter the water.

Which destinations are suitable for a swimmer who is not confident?

Spots accessible from a sheltered beach or a few minutes by boat remain the simplest: Port Launay in the Seychelles, the Îlets Pigeon in Guadeloupe, the beaches of the Var national parks. Even there, being able to swim without a vest and return alone to shore remains fundamental. The vest helps, it does not replace swimming.

Are you a beginner? Our 10 good reasons to start snorkeling lay the foundations.

Guadeloupe: Îlets Pigeon

The Îlets Pigeon, opposite Malendure beach, are part of the heart of Guadeloupe National Park. The park brochure forbids touching living things, collecting anything, feeding animals, and anchoring on coral reefs and seagrass beds of the reserve. It recommends mineral filter sunscreen, a point covered in our file on sunscreen and marine environments. To choose a center, see our guide to the Cousteau Reserve in Guadeloupe.

Seychelles: Port Launay

According to the Seychelles Parks Authority (SPGA), Port Launay is the only marine park in the country accessible by land and sea. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The posted entrance fee is 200 rupees for a non-resident aged at least 13 years (page consulted on October 3, 2026).

Egypt: Hurghada and Safaga

In Hurghada, most trips depart by boat to the Giftun Islands. No official dated amount for the access fee to this protected area was found, so ask if it is included in the price. Safaga follows the same logic. Offshore, the wind can change quickly. Ask where the boat stops and how you get back on board, then compare regions in our guide to diving holidays in Egypt.

Thailand: Ko Phi Phi

Ko Phi Phi is located in a national park. Upon the reopening of Maya Bay in 2022, the entrance fee was 400 baht for foreigners, according to journalist Richard Barrow, and swimming is prohibited there. On the Andaman side, the period from November to April is most often cited for calm seas.

France: Port-Cros, Porquerolles, and the Calanques

These spots depend on the Port-Cros and Calanques national parks.

Access is from the beach, and the mistral wind can raise the sea in a few hours.

Where do the boat and current decide the outing?

In Belize, Indonesia, Costa Rica, and Polynesia, most outings depart by boat to a reef or a pass. The required level then depends on the current of the day and the way to get back on board, two points that only the briefing can decide on site.

Belize: Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley

Shark Ray Alley is part of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, off Ambergris Caye. According to The San Pedro Sun, the fee for a foreigner increased from 10 to 15 US dollars on August 1, 2024. The same article also mentions 20 dollars, so check when booking.

Indonesia: Raja Ampat

For a foreigner, Raja Ampat has two fees in 2026, according to Raja Ampat Biodiversity (January 2026): a marine park permit at 1,000,000 rupiah, valid for twelve months, and a district ticket for the same amount. Children under 12 are exempt from the permit. But the real filter remains the current, as the straits between islands can be crossed by strong tidal currents.

Ask if the outing is planned as a drift dive.

Costa Rica: Cahuita

We highlight Cahuita National Park on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, created in 1982. It is managed by SINAC. Its reef has lost much of its live coral since the 1980s due to sediment and bleaching. Entry on the village side works by donation. The period from February to April is often mentioned in descriptions for visibility, as an indication.

French Polynesia: the lagoons

Humpback whales frequent these waters mainly from July to November (indicative range). A regulation announced in November 2025 prohibits entry near whales in lagoons, bays, and passes, and reserves the activity for authorized providers. No outing guarantees an encounter.

Which outings require strict supervision?

Three destinations on the list require a tighter framework: the whale shark in Mexico, orcas in Norway, and the Silfra fissure in Iceland. They are practiced with an operator, in open sea or very cold water, and each has written rules.

Mexico: whale shark and cenotes

At Isla Mujeres, the 2026 whale shark season runs from May 15 to September 17, according to PorEsto! (February 2026), with a maximum of 120 boats per day, under CONANP control. The outing takes place in open sea. What level? A swimmer comfortable in deep water, able to follow the guide. Cenotes have their own fees and rules for each site.

Norway: orcas in winter

Around Tromsø, the season is mainly from October to January, according to the Visit Tromsø tourist office. A national whale watching regulation has existed since December 9, 2019. However, the local 2017 guidelines are not legally binding, and professionals in the region are calling for a ban on snorkeling near orcas.

We keep the destination, without recommending it to a beginner.

Iceland: the Silfra fissure

Silfra is located in Thingvellir National Park. The park announces water at 2 to 4 °C and visibility of about 100 meters. Its rules require a buddy system, forbid caves, and require a dry suit or thick neoprene with hood, gloves, and booties. Operators also require a medical questionnaire.

Does snorkeling require real physical fitness?

Yes, more than lagoon photos suggest. In 2013, DAN summarized an Australian study on 140 snorkeling deaths between 1994 and 2006: 60 had a cardiac cause. The typical profile was a man about 65 years old, found floating silently.

This article informs; it does not replace the advice of a doctor competent in diving medicine.

Thus, a medical check-up makes sense before an outing in open sea or cold water, especially with cardiac history. Visibility says nothing about your safety. A turquoise lagoon can hide a current pass. If you hesitate between two destinations, count the real margin: a park fee paid on site, an outing canceled by wind, an extra hotel night to keep a fallback slot. Would you book it that way?

In short, keep an extra day.

FAQ

Which snorkeling destination to choose for a beginner?

A spot accessible from a sheltered beach, like Port Launay in the Seychelles, remains the simplest. The final decision is up to the professional on site, depending on the day’s weather.

Do you have to pay to snorkel in a marine reserve?

Often, yes. Hol Chan in Belize charges 15 US dollars since August 1, 2024, Port Launay 200 rupees, and Raja Ampat two fees of 1,000,000 rupiah in 2026. Check the amount before leaving, as it changes.

Can you snorkel at Silfra without being a diver?

Yes, Thingvellir Park allows snorkeling, in buddy pairs and with a dry suit or thick neoprene. The dry suit diving certification is only required for divers.
