Archipel Diving in Argelès-sur-Mer: what you can check before booking

On the tourist office page for the Pyrénées-Orientales, Archipel Plongée shows an opening from April 11 to November 15, 2026, departing from Port-Argelès. Here is a dated reference point. The rest of what circulates online about this club deserves sorting.

This page only includes what is public and verifiable as of October 3, 2026: official tourist sheets, SSI directory, regulations of the nearby marine reserve. No reviews, no visits.

The club’s website, archipelplongee.com, could not be accessed from our tools during this update. Keep it as the final reference before booking.

What do we know about Archipel Plongée in Argelès-sur-Mer?

Archipel Plongée is a center located in Port-Argelès, in the Les Villégiales du Quai d’Honneur residence, on the esplanade of the Nouveau Monde. The official departmental and regional tourism sheets announce an opening from April 11 to November 15, 2026, with baptisms, courses, guided dives, training sessions, and snorkeling, in French, English, and Spanish.

On the training side, the SSI directory ranks it as a “Diamond Center.” It lists freediving, wreck diving, extended range diving, and professional courses such as Dive Guide or Assistant Instructor. Rentals cover vests, wetsuits, regulators, tanks, computers, and photo equipment. In short, the profile of a center focused on SSI training, with an offer that goes beyond just summer baptisms.

The rest requires sorting.

The previous version of this article listed FFESSM, ANMP, PADI, FSGT, and CMAS trainings. None of the public sources consulted on October 3, 2026, confirm these affiliations, so we remove them until proven otherwise on the club’s website or in the federal directory. The same goes for prices. The tourist office sheet shows “from €45” per adult for 2026, without specifying which service this price corresponds to. But ask for details in writing. A baptism, a boat exploration, and a training session do not have the same supervision or duration, and the starting price tells you nothing about the space on board.

Can you dive in the Cerbère-Banyuls marine reserve from Argelès?

Yes, under conditions. The Cerbère-Banyuls marine natural reserve, created in 1974, covers 650 hectares over 6.5 km of coastline. Prefectural order No. 005/2022 of January 14, 2022, subjects all scuba diving to an annual authorization from the manager and totally prohibits it in the 65-hectare reinforced protection zone.

Quotas are set by the same text. It provides 20 authorizations for commercial entities, 20 for associations, and 500 for individual divers, who then dive in groups of up to five with the authorization holder. Night diving must be reported to the manager before 5 p.m. on the same day. The buoyancy compensator is mandatory. And any contact with the seabed or species is prohibited, as is collecting and feeding (we detailed why you should never touch marine life).

The text does not say which club holds an authorization this year.

Thus, the only useful question to ask Archipel Plongée is this: is the club among the authorized structures for 2026, and which sites in the reserve does it actually target? Without a clear answer, count on sites outside the reserve. Nothing serious, the rocky coast continues well beyond its limits.

What level is required to dive on the Côte Vermeille?

In France, the Sports Code (articles A322-71 and following) is based on skills rather than commercial certifications. A PE20 diver, the level 1 skill, dives under supervision up to 20 m. A PA20 can dive autonomously up to 20 m, and a PA60 up to 60 m, always within the framework set by the club. The club’s dive director makes the decision on the day.

For an SSI, PADI, or foreign certification, it is the dive director who establishes the correspondence with these skills, relying on your card, your logbook, and sometimes a refresher dive. Your number of dives weighs as much as the card. A diver certified three years ago, without any outings since, does not regain their bearings in ten minutes on the boat. No one will judge you for saying so. Announce it when booking.

On a rocky coast, the maximum depth of the dive group is set at the briefing, then adhered to even if the drop-off tempts you to go deeper.

Moreover, buoyancy counts double in a reserve where contact with the bottom is prohibited. If you doubt your adjustment, reread how to balance your buoyancy with weights before departure.

Tramontane and water temperature: when to go?

The club’s tourist sheet announces a 2026 season from April 11 to November 15. For the water, the 2024 activity report of the reserve indicates that in 2023, the temperature at 5 and 10 m regularly exceeded 23 °C from July to September. For spring and autumn, no dated data was found: impossible to decide from here.

The tramontane is the other variable. The same report describes it as the prevailing northwest wind, the one that blows the most throughout the year, with gusts recorded at over 150 km/h at Cap Béar in 2024. It blows from land to sea. A calm sea near the port can become rougher as the boat moves away from shelter. However, no public rule sets a cancellation threshold. The club decides, and postponing due to wind is not a whim.

Keep at least one buffer day in your stay if diving is the real goal of the trip, because a day of strong tramontane can shift the entire schedule.

At the beginning or end of the season, hands cool down quickly. Our guide on choosing diving gloves helps you find the right thickness, without forgetting that contact with the bottom remains prohibited in the reserve.

What to ask the club before booking?

Five questions are enough to frame the booking: is the club authorized in the reserve in 2026, which sites does it target according to your level, how many divers per group and per boat, what is the fallback plan in case of tramontane, and what exactly does the announced price include.

Add a question about emergencies. A 2015 page from the Saint-Pierre clinic in Perpignan presents its hyperbaric chamber as the only one in the region and operational 24/7. This information is over ten years old. Ask the club for the current procedure, which goes at sea through the CROSS (channel 16 on VHF or 196 from a phone) and on land through 15. Why insist? Because in case of decompression accident, onboard oxygen and rapid alert are paramount.

For comparison, other club sheets have been reviewed with the same method, such as diving in Marseille with Dune or Hippocampe Diving in Porto-Vecchio.

And if an answer remains vague, the cost is concrete: a day of stay blocked for nothing, or an outing paid for on a less ambitious site than expected. Would you book it like that?

FAQ

Is Archipel Diving open all year round?

No. The tourist office sheets announce an opening from April 11 to November 15, 2026. Check the dates on the club’s website before booking your stay.

Can you touch the animals in the Cerbère-Banyuls reserve?

No. Prefectural decree No. 005/2022 prohibits any contact with the seabed or species, any collection, and any feeding. The buoyancy compensator is mandatory there.

What level is required to dive with a club in Argelès?

An introductory dive can be done without certification, with an instructor. For explorations, the Sports Code sets skills (PE20, PA20, PA60…) and the dive director assesses your certification and logbook. They also set the depth for your dive group.

Where is the closest hyperbaric chamber to Argelès?

A page from the Saint-Pierre Clinic in Perpignan, dated 2015, presents its chamber as the only one in the region. Have the current pathway confirmed by the club. At sea, the alert goes through the CROSS (VHF channel 16 or 196), on land by calling 15.
