Argonaute near Toulouse: what you can check before choosing your training

At 14 rue Hermès, in Ramonville-Saint-Agne, the Argonaute announces a 15-meter deep pit, which it presents as the deepest private pit in the Southwest. This is the first landmark. The rest is verified page by page.

This sheet only includes what the center publishes on its website, what the SSI directory and the Occitanie tourist portal display, consulted in early October 2026. No reviews, no visits.

Prices change. Keep the center’s website as the final reference before paying.

What do we know about the Argonaute in Ramonville-Saint-Agne?

The Argonaute is an SSI training center located at 14 rue Hermès, in Ramonville-Saint-Agne, southeast of Toulouse. It includes a 15-meter pit, a gear shop with a maintenance workshop, a boating license school, freediving, and an underwater escape game reserved for certified divers. The SSI directory classifies it as an instructor training center.

The site distinguishes two entities. On one side, the commercial center, which sells SSI training courses. On the other, the French diving school l’Argonaute, a non-profit club under the 1901 law created in 2009 and managed by volunteers. This club claims affiliation with the FFESSM under number 08-31-0446. It offers weekly training sessions in the pit, for both diving and freediving. If you are looking for a federal curriculum, it is therefore to this club that you should turn, and not to the SSI catalog.

Regarding hours, the site indicates opening from Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Monday is closed.

But the SSI directory still shows other hours, with opening as early as 7 a.m. and from Monday to Saturday, which clearly shows that a directory listing ages faster than the center’s own website. Call before you go.

What training does the Argonaute offer, and at what price?

The online catalog follows a single diving path, SSI. It goes from the try dive (Try Scuba) to the instructor certification, including Open Water Diver, Advanced Adventurer, and Diver Stress & Rescue. The site also announces more than sixteen specialties, including nitrox, deep diving, wreck diving, and dry suit diving.

Prices noted in early October 2026.

The previous version of this article put PADI on the same level as SSI. However, no training page on the site mentions PADI. So this affiliation is removed. The same goes for Rescue Diver, a PADI title: at SSI, the curriculum is called Diver Stress & Rescue. And the Deep Diver “at 40 m” from the old table does not appear as such in the catalog.

The center also offers boating licenses, with a coastal license and an inland waters license at €358 each, an offshore license at €600, and the CRR radio certificate at €120. To place the SSI certification against the French path, our guide to the FFESSM Level 1 training details what the first federal level covers.

How does training in the 15-meter pit take place?

The pit accommodates up to 16 divers at a time, including instructors. A session lasts one hour, with 45 minutes in the water or at the edge. Tanks and weights are provided, and the site rents fins, wetsuits, jackets, or regulators for €3 each. The Open Water course includes six of these.

The site boasts a protected environment, sheltered from the weather. This is a real comfort for learning how to clear a mask or stabilize your jacket. Thus, the stabilization you work on in the pit remains the most important skill once at sea, and we have detailed how to adjust your weight to balance your buoyancy. But the pit has no current, and ascending onto a boat, with the swell, must be learned at sea. It remains a pool.

There is one point we could not decide on.

The center’s Open Water page mentions “8 sessions (6 in the pit and 2 at sea),” whereas the official SSI Open Water Diver course sheet provides for 4 open water dives with a maximum depth of 18 m. One sea session could very well include two dives, but the page does not say so. It also does not say where these dives take place, nor if the trip to the coast is included. Ask these three questions in writing.

What age and medical certificate are required to start?

The center accepts children from 8 years old for the introductory dive and from 10 years old for the Open Water Diver, as provided by the official SSI sheet. This also requires being able to swim, without prior certification. The center’s page does not specify the medical document expected for SSI training.

Ask for it before paying.

On the federation side, if you join the club affiliated with the FFESSM, the federation publishes a model certificate of no contraindication, version June 2026. It can be signed by a general practitioner, a sports doctor, a doctor specialized in underwater medicine, or a federation doctor. Its validity lapses in case of a change in health status or diving accident. For a minor, parental consent is also required. No one can decide remotely that you are fit, and this form does not do so, since this decision is up to the doctor who examines you and, at the edge of the pit, the instructor who supervises you.

However, the medical issue is better resolved upstream than at the edge of the pit, when the slot is booked and the instructor is waiting. A missing certificate on the day delays the entire progression, whereas a doctor’s appointment is often scheduled well before the first session.

What to ask the Argonaute before booking?

Four questions are enough to frame a registration: how many sea dives does the Open Water really include, where and when they take place, who pays for travel and accommodation, and what medical document the center requires. The answers change the real budget much more than the listed price.

Toulouse is far from the sea, so natural environment dives imply travel. The site also offers trips to Gozo, Marsa Shagra in Egypt, or Raja Ampat, whose conditions are described on their respective pages. If Gozo attracts you, we have reviewed the best dive sites in Malta. For a closer coast, the sheet for Archipel Plongée in Argelès-sur-Mer has been reviewed with the same criteria. So has that of Aquadomia in Marseille.

In short, the advertised price does not tell the whole story.

And the actual cost is quickly calculated. To the €649 for the Open Water, add travel to the coast, one or two nights on site, and perhaps a thicker wetsuit if your sea dives fall out of season. Would you book it like that?
